Dog Breeds – Cocker Spaniel

November 15th, 2019

Cocker Spaniels are smart, gentle, happy dogs, big enough to be sporty and compact enough to be “portable”. Their average weight is around 25 pounds and they live for 10 to 14 years approximately.

Part of the sporting group, Cockers enjoy exercise such as retrieving a ball or other toy and accompanying people on a walk. This breed wants to please humans and enjoys play, so both can be used to encourage some exercise. Cockers are eager playmates for kids and are easily trained. They are sociable and, with a canine companion, both can have fun together and spend lots of energy!

It’s believed that Cocker Spaniels originated in Spain. They have been bird hunters’ helpers, since before the development of the rifle. In America, there are two varieties: the American and the English Cocker Spaniel. The English is taller and has a longer head, if compared to its American cousin, with a coat not as abundant.

Speaking about the coat, Cockers require regular and thorough professional grooming sessions, to avoid tangles or mats. Owners can help and comb them at home between grooming visits. Cockers should be bathed with a high-quality shampoo, and need to be rinsed and re-rinsed to make sure that no residues are left, as they may cause skin irritation.
